This site-by-step guide will walk you through the process of filling out each relevant section of your Japanese tax forms.

There are four forms which you need: Declaration Page 1, Declaration Page 2, Expenses Front, Expenses Back.

You can download these Japanese Tax Forms in English, exclusive to GaijinTax.Com, from the ‘Tax Forms‘ section of this site.  Download and print them as you need to fill in each section as we take you through.  And please don’t let their initial complexity frighten you – you will leave most of it blank anyway!

You also need one more document, your Withholding Tax slip from your employer(s) (click here for an example).  In Japanese it is called a ‘Gen-sen-cho-shu-hyo’ (げんせんちょうしゅうひょう、源泉徴収票).  This gensenchoshuhyo is the little extra slip which you receive with your regular pay slip for December – for the most of you it will be given some time in January.  It shows your total income for the year, as well as the amount of withholding tax which has already been held by your Employer.  This is the money you are trying to get back.

Note: In Japanese, the two declaration forms, page 1 and page 2, are called “Kaku-tei-shin-koku-sho” (かくていしんこくしょ、確定申告書).  Make sure when you go to the tax office, you ask for FORM B, not FORM A, and for the specific year.   They all look very similar.  The Expenses form is one page, back and front, and is called “Shu-shi-uchi-wake-sho” (しゅうしうちわけしょ、収支内訳書).  This form is the same every year.
